Participants can compete in one of two divisions depending on their background.

• General Division - suitable for students taking or having completed first-year high school chemistry, but not enrolled in AP chemistry.  Students in this division take a short (< 1 hr) exam and compete in individual and team laboratory events.
• USNCO Division - suitable for more advanced students such as those enrolled in second-year or AP chemistry courses.  Students in this division take a more challenging, full-length ACS standardized exam in addition to team and individual laboratory events. Those earning top scores and who meet eligibility requirements will be nominated to participate in the United States National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO). This competition will be held on Saturday, April 20^th at NMSU and is used to select participants in the International Chemistry Olympiad.
